I really love having professional pictures done. It's so much fun to see how your family looks through someone else's lens. And I prefer photos to almost any other type of art in my house--it's so much more personal, and my children are my favorite thing to look at.
But we hadn't had real family portraits done since O was 5 months old (and he's 5 years old now), which meant Q wasn't even born yet. We were past due, to say the least. So, a few weeks ago, we had family pictures taken by Matt's talented cousin, Lucy. She is a photographer and graphic designer--she also designed the Little Nesting Doll logo and header! She's pretty awesome.
I spent a few days the week before the photo shoot gathering outfit options. I didn't want matchy-matchy outfits, but I did want to keep the clothes within a color scheme. I actually had a lot of help from B--she helped me pick the color scheme of navy, green, and hot pink (which was entirely based on a pair of her pants). I also wanted the kids' personalities to come out in their clothing choices too--they definitely each have their own personal style already. BUT I didn't want to just let them pick whatever they wanted to wear because I knew there was no chance they would all look right together. So B and I got together several options for each of the boys and let them pick from an already-approved selection. It was a lot of fun and we were able to make it all work without having to buy anything new--which was one of my goals for this photo shoot. You do not have to go out and buy all new clothes for something like this.
My favorite in this one is O's face...it is so typically him. I love it!

And more reality-based. I love this one!
It did get hot as the photo shoot progressed (we were going for almost 2 hours!), and as the weather warmed up, the boys shed clothes. By the end they were all shirtless. But that's typical of them, and rather than be upset that they were not in their specifically selected outfits, I chose to embrace their personal choices and go with it.
The boys spend half their days without shirts on, so this is a good reflection of our real lives.
We also got some good shots of Matt and I together. Our 10-year anniversary is coming up soon, and so many of the photographs we take on a daily basis are of the kids--I wanted to make sure we got some good shots of just the two of us so that when we are old and grey we can look back and remember the good old days.
Ten years in, and I would marry him again in a heartbeat. :)
